š¤ÆBeing Wrong ā My New Favorite Thing To Be
Iām writing this one cautiously because Iām pretty sure my younger self is lurking around the corner, ready to slap me for even thinking I now enjoy being wrong.
I remember her ā she was quite a gal, and she still shows up every now and again. You know⦠āShe Who Must Not Be Wrongā (yup, thereās your Harry Potter reference for the week š).
But seriously ā how much time have we spent fearing being wrong? Protecting ourselves from it, sometimes at all costs. We HAVE to be right, right? Itās the basis of every conflict: āIām right, youāre wrong.ā Itās literally started wars.
Now, donāt get me wrong (pun intended) ā I still hold knowledge in high esteem, and I like to know things. Iām talking about having to be right. That get-in-your-face kind of right where you stop hearing what anyone is saying because you already know youāre correct.
The kind that says:
āIf you donāt believe what I believe, or see what I see, then you are completely wrong⦠because I am completely right.ā
The Cost of Always Being Right šø
Itās such a divide, and itās as old as time ā right vs. wrong, black vs. white, good vs. evil.
But where does it actually get us?
What good behaviors come out of this?
ā¦Exactly.
Hereās the thing: while youāre busy being right, thereās one thing you cannot do at the same time ā listen.
When Iāve decided Iām right, I donāt hear you. I donāt see you. Iām only thinking:
- How can I make you agree with me?
- How can I plead my case?
- How can I be heard?
Itās not about listening⦠itās about winning.
And itās exhausting. Physically. Emotionally. With zero upside.
Why We Crave Rightness š§
So whatās the big deal about being right anyway? Do the stars align? Do you win an award? Do people flock to you?
Nope. Nope. And definitely nope.
The truth: being right makes our brains feel safe. Itās a security blanket for the ego.
Your brainās #1 job? Protect you. And it equates:
- Being right = safe ā
- Being wrong = danger ā
Science suggests that this is a deep, primal wiring. Back in the cave days, being wrong about which berries to eat could kill you ā so defending our ārightnessā was literally survival.
But today? The stakes are usually much smaller⦠like whose turn it is to do the dishes.
How Curiosity Changes the Game š
Curiosity is the magic solvent that dissolves the need to be right.
Instead of:
āI have to defend my position.ā
It becomes:
āI wonder what I might learn here.ā
That shift takes you out of fight mode and into explore mode. It turns disagreements into treasure hunts. And hereās the real kicker ā when you stop obsessing over being right, you actually become the kind of person others want to listen to⦠because youāre listening to them.
The Unexpected Joy of Being Wrong š
Hereās the plot twist: being wrong is the birthplace of every good thing weāve ever learned.
When you realize youāre wrong, youāve:
- Spotted a blind spot you can now fix.
- Made space for better information.
- Opened the door to creativity, problem-solving, and connection.
Being wrong humbles you in the best way ā you get more curious, more flexible, and a whole lot more fun to be around.
7 Real Benefits of Being Wrong ā
- You learn faster.
Every āoopsā is a shortcut to understanding ā it shows you exactly where the gap is so you can fill it. - You build stronger relationships.
Admitting youāre wrong signals humility and respect for other perspectives. - You reduce stress.
Ditching the need to be right drops a heavy emotional backpack full of tension and frustration. - You get more creative.

Embrace the Freedom of Being Wrong š
Being wrong is not a flaw ā itās a feature. Itās your built-in update system, your invitation to see more, learn more, connect more deeply. Who knows, you might enjoy being wrong.
Curiosity defeats fear. And when you remove the fear of being wrong, you can turn:
āOh no, Iām wrong.ā
into:
āOh wow, what else is out there?ā
Thatās freedom!
The less energy you spend defending your rightness, the more you can spend actually living, growing, laughing, and surprising yourself.
Being wrong might just be the most right thing you do all week.
